Why we are called Pluvian
But could something make the crocodile even more efficient?
Egyptian myth has it that something could. A bird. A particularly brave bird.
After a crocodile had enjoyed a good meal, it would laze on the riverbank and open its’ mouth in invitation. The trusting bird would hop into its gaping jaws, and peck away at its teeth, flossing them for bits of meat and leaches. With its simple and quick service, this little bird kept the crocodile's teeth clean, sharp and robust, allowing it to continue its day-to-day life of ruthlessly efficient predation.
This bird, an Egyptian plover, was known as the Pluvian bird.
